Fires in Greece: Heartwarming moments amid fear and destruction

A heartwarming picture amid fear, despair and destruction as the summer fires rage in Greece: a firefighter from Romania deployed to Greece is holding a young white lamb in his arms. The picture was posted by the Embassy of Romania in Greece and went viral with dozens of Greeks thanking the support.

The fire in Schimatari and Dilesi broke out Monday noon and forced the evacuation of locals. IT was contained after several hours.

The fire in Dilesi was only one for 138 in total that broke out between Monday and early Wednesday fanned by strong winds and most possible caused by negligence or arson.

Also on Wednesday, firefighters continue to battle multiple scattered fronts of the large forest fire near the popular seaside resort of Porto Germeno, in West Attica, also on Wednesday, as strong winds revived the blaze that was decaying on Tuesday evening.

Οver 150 firefighters and volunteers fought all night to contain the fire, that burned down two houses and forced the evacuation of Mytikas settlement. No human was injured.

By the first light of the day, water-dropping aircraft and helicopters joined the battle again.

Τhe foreign national, who was detained as suspect for arson in Porto Germeno on later on Tuesday was released after authorities confirmed that he was not involved in the fire.

Two other blazes, one in Peloponnese and one in Fokida, were partially contained on Wednesday.

“The blaze in Korifi, Ilia, “is located mainly in a ravine, neither threatened nor threatens residential areas,” Aggeliki Dionysopoulou, head of Civil Protection of the municipality of Pyrgos, Aggeliki Dionysopoulou told state-run news agency amna.

A second large blaze in the foothills of Mount Parnassos in Fokida, had been largely contained, but not before burning through the famous olive groves of Delphi.

In Zakynthos, a blaze burning in forested area of Kambi seemed to be contained.

Civil protection Warning

According to the Fire Risk Prediction Map, issued by the General Secretariat for Civil Protection, there is a very high risk of fire in the regions of Attica, central and south Evia, Viotia, Samos, Ikaria, Chios and Psara on Wednesday.

The Fire Service said that over 65 wild- and forest-fires occurred in 24 hours Monday to Tuesday evening and a total of 138 until Wednesday noon.

The Civil Porection marked “Yellow”, Level 3, the regions at high risk of fires and listed:
Attica, Argolida
Central and South Evia
Areas in Thessaloniki and Halkidiki
Viotia, Corinth, Crete, West Greece and Epirus
Dodecanese, Sporades, East Aegean Sea and Ionian Sea.

During the fire season May to Ocotber fires outdoors are strictly forbidden.
