Sermon against abortions to be read in churches across Greece

Α  sermon against abortionσ will be read in the churches across Greece, the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Church decided on Thursday. The sermon against abortions will b read on Sunday, September 8, on the feast of the Birth of Virgin Mary.

The Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece convened under the presidency of His Beatitude Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Mr. Ieronymos, and decided, among other things, to send circulars for sermons about “the protection of human life and the avoidance of abortions,” media reported.

IT should be recalled that regarding the issue of abortions, the Holy Synod has established POTE??? the “Day of the Unborn Child”, a decision that “was taken with the aim of protecting the child and to deal with the demographic problem”.

The first Sunday after Christmas was chosen as a day to commemorate the position of the Church against abortion, while the permanent position of the Holy Synod is that “voluntary abortion is murder,”

“The Holy Synod, taking into account the recent developments on the subject of abortions and based on the Holy Scriptures and the Holy Tradition of the Orthodox Church of Christ, expresses its theological position on the fetus as a complete and whole human being from the moment of conception that’s why it considers voluntary abortion as murder and does not accept it,” the Holy Synod announced in February 2020.

News website news247.gr noted: “It is therefore obvious that the issue of abortions, which caused an “earthquake” in the USA, will return to our country at the first given opportunity. The president of the Hellenic Solution, Kyriakos Velopoulos, has stated his position on the issue many times, saying from the floor of the Parliament: ‘We are dying demographically, you don’t give incentives for Greeks to be born, you are vaccinating the country, you also want abortions.

The website also recalls that only two member-state in the European Union prohibit abortions: Poland, which has placed medical barriers to access, and Malta. Within the European Parliament, the ultra-conservative European party ECR, which holds 64 seats, officially calls for the restriction of access to abortion. According to reports, anti-abortion organizations are active in Europe, funded by conservative circles in the USA.

In Greece there have been on and off attempts to bring the issue of abortions on public debate in recent years, So far, they gave failed but they never give up.

  1. What will happen is that the 1940’s/50’s back-street abortionists will rear their ugly heads again — and if women cannot afford to pay a back-street abortionist they will probably resort to the old-fashioned method of using a knitting needle to do it themselves — with deadly consequences.

  2. The church should have no say. It’s a woman’s right to choose.

  3. What a revealing photo. A group of bearded white men; not a woman in sight declaring that voluntary abortion is murder. What arrogance. What cruelty!
In January 2021, the Greek government had anti-abortion adverts removed from the Athens metro system as public campaigns, “should not divide public opinion or, clearly, insult women who have been forced to make such a difficult choice.”
Of course, nothing will said by the government to the church.
