Heavy rainfall floods large parts of the island of Corfu

A health center and a school were flooded, people were trapped in their homes, rock slides and broken trees blocked the main roads on Corfu after a heavy rainfall hit the island in the Ionian Sea early Tuesday morning.

The rushing waters flooded areas in central and south Corfu.

Municipality workers and fire fighters are trying to clean streets and roads from rocks and trees.

The area badly hit by the downpour is Lefkimmi, where Health workers in the village health center were seen pushing waters away with brooms and mops.

A video by local newspaper kerkyrasimera.gr,  shows the flooded High School of ​​Lefkimmi, with students taking pictures with their mobile phones.

The meteorological station in Gouvies, Corfu, recorded 83 millimeters of rain from Monday night to Tuesday morning.

The rain weather front gradually spread mainly to Epirus, Sterea, Thessaly and Western Macedonia.

According to the latest forecast data from the National Observatory of Athens / meteo.gr, for the rest of the day rainfalls and storms are expected in the Ionian Sea, Epirus, Western mainland and Northwestern Peloponnese.

The effects in the South Ionian, Western Mainland and Northwestern Peloponnese will be strong in places. Temporary local rains will also occur in mainly mountainous parts of the rest of the mainland, with the exception of Thrace.

The weather phenomena are forecast to weaken in the evening hours of Tuesday.
