Greece’s unions to launch a 24h general strike on Nov 9

Greece’s umbrella unions of the public and private sector ADEDY and GSEE have called for a 24-hour general strike on Wednesday, November 9, 2022. Purpose of the general mobilization is to protest the rising prices in all sectors of life in the country.

The unions participating in the strike accuse the government of eroding workers’ rights and not doing enough to offset the impact of rising energy costs and inflation, which are taking a serious toll on wage earners.

The strike is expected to paralyze Greece as unions of public transport workers will join it as well.

Media organizations, lawyers and notaries have also announced that they will be joining the nationwide action, as will other sectors.

Protest rallies will take place in downtown Athens and other cities.

The protest gathering is scheduled at 11 a.m. at Klafthmonos Square on Stadiou Avenue.

Public Transport, Taxis mobilization to trouble commuters

Blue buses: workstoppage from shirt start until 9 a.m. and from 9 p.m. until the shift end

The 60 bus routes assigned to KTEL are expected to operate as usually.

Metro, ISAP and Tram: Work stoppage from shift start until 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. until the shift end.

The Athens Electric Tram Conductors Association (S.H.I.T.A.) and the Attica Metro Electric Conductors Association (S.H.I.A.M.) also decided to stop work from the start of the shift until 8 a.m. and from 10 p.m. until the end of the shift.

Railway unions also decided to participate in the strike. Specifically, the Panhellenic Railway Federation decided to participate in a 24-hour strike while the Panhellenic Union of Traction Personnel, in order to facilitate the participation of citizens in the strike, decided to hold work stoppages until 9:00 in the morning and from 17:00 in the afternoon.

An announcement from Hellenic Train is expected on how the railway will run, including the Suburban  (Proastiakos) that connects the Metro with the International Airport of Athens.

According to taxi union SATA, taxi drivers will also participate in the 24-hour strike of GSEE.

According to a joint statement by public transport workers:

The impoverishment of the Greek people under the pretext of the energy crisis and the war in Ukraine, at a time when business giants and energy providers are handing over balance sheets with unprecedented super-profits, leaves no room for action other than campaigning to stop the theater of the absurd, in which the spectators watch in amazement the upward price races of the most basic items.

Unfortunately, government interventions to combat punctuality are proving insufficient every day, and households are increasingly on their knees. Complete bleeding of wages from every direction.

Energy, rent, fuel and basic necessities, have destroyed every trace of future planning, draining the savings tanks and degrading the purchasing power of the Greek citizen. Comparisons with similar management in other European countries are inevitable, deconstructing any narrative for successfully dealing with the crisis we are going through.

Practical support and strengthening of all citizens and especially vulnerable social groups. Now before the social fabric completely disintegrates.

In order to have the maximum mass and participation of the people in the rally, the trains will run from 09:00 – 17:00, so that there is easier access to Klafthmonos Square for the gathering that will take place, the same day at 11:00 a.m.

KTG will update information about participation of other sectors in the strike.
