The Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”will limit free parking at Arrivals and Departures and will charge a fee for …long Welcome and Goodbye hugs, kisses and tears.
The managing company AIA said in a statement that the measure aims to bring order in the relevant areas.
Bars will be installed outside the entrances and exits of the Arrivals and Departures areas for the free short-term stop that will be limited to 10 minutes. Drivers exceeding this limit will pay. However, the charge is not known yet.
Bars will be installed also in the paid parking of cars for up to one hour.
The Airport managing company (AIA) said it is proceeding with the configuration of entrances and exits on the access road sections to the departure and arrival areas, which will be controlled with an automatic system of tilting bars, in order to avoid overcrowding.
As the AIA stated, due to the increase in passenger traffic to levels approaching 2019, in combination with the particularly intense use of private cars in the transport to and from the airport, it is proceeding with targeted solutions.
The areas will be controlled with an automatic system of tilting bars.
The time of passage, stop and exit of the vehicles will be set at 10 minutes and beyond these a fee will be imposed on the drivers who are at the arrivals and departures.
Construction works will start in November 2022 and will be completed before next summer.
The specific interventions are fully compatible with international practices, as they are now also applied in most major European airports and there have been transport studies that prove their functionality, the AIA said further..
The revenues from the imposed fee will be allocated to support the road safety agency.
At the same time, the provision of free parking time in the Short Term 1 & 2 car parks for 20 minutes will continue to apply to all users without exception.
Finally, there will be special provisions for travelers with reduced mobility and increased needs.
Further updates on the progress of the projects and relevant useful information will be provided at regular intervals. [via newsauto.gr]

This will bring even more chaos. Cars will queue at entrance and exit, some drivers will try to reverse to pay fines…
Athens Airport is becoming more expensive and less comfortable. Metro is expensive, but rail authority, can not be even bothered to fix clocks and displays on platforms!
