Greece’s National Mmeteorological Service EMY issued a warning on Monday, January 9, about an upcoming weather deterioration with heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms, hail and gale-force winds of 8 and locally up to 9 Beaufort.
The weather deterioration follows a prolonged fair weather period since the start of December with average day temperatures around 20 degrees Celsius.
The weather deterioration will be temporary from Monday evening until Wednesday afternoon, January 9-11, 2023.
Thunderstorms are forecast to occur mainly in the coastal areas and will be accompanied by a high frequency of lightning.
The bad weather front will set in Monday evening in the northern Ionian Sea and Epirus, it will affect the rest of the Ionian, western Sterea and western Peloponnese and gradually the rest of the country as of Tuesday

A. Monday (09-01-2023) from evening hours
a) Heavy rainfalls and storms in the northern Ionian and Epirus.
b) Stormy south-southwest winds of intensity 8 Beaufort will prevail in the Ionian.
B. Tuesday (10-01-2023)
a) Heavy rainfalls and storms in the morning hours in Epirus, until noon in the Ionian, western Sterea and western Peloponnese; from midday and until the evening hours in Thrace, eastern Macedonia and the islands of the north and east Aegean and from the afternoon hours in the Dodecanese.
The intense weather phenomena will temporarily affect the Cyclades and Crete in mid-afternoon.
b) Stormy western winds of intensity 8 Beaufort will prevail in the Ionian Sea and south-southwest winds of intensity 8 locally 9 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.
c) Snowfall will occur in the highlands of the mainland.
C. Wednesday (10-01-2023)
a) Heavy rainfalls and storms in the Dodecanese with a gradual weakening from midday.
b) Stormy north-western winds of intensity 8 Beaufort will prevail in the Ionian Sea.
