Foreign Affairs & Defense Council extends tenure of General Staff Chief

Greece’s Council for Foreign Affairs and Defense (KYSEA) has extended the tenure of General Konstantinos Floros as chief of the Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA), it was announced Monday.

Floros, who first assumed office in January 2020, will serve for another year.

Lieutenant General Angelos Houdeloudis was appointed chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS) and Vice Admiral Ioannis Drymousis chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff (HNGS).

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Extending Floros’ tenure without explanation to media reports that he was monitored by National Intelligence Service EYP was sharply criticized by the main opposition party.

SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance attacked PM Mitsotakis on Monday for failing to explain why the EYP had monitored the phone of the head of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff chief, General Konstantinos Floros.

“The sickness of Mitsotakis’ deep state mechanism has unfortunately also contaminated the leadership of the armed forces,” the party said in an announcement on Monday.

“Without any answer on the wiretapping of the HNDGS chief by EYP, today Mr. Mitsotakis simply confirmed that he does not hesitate, on the altar of his blackmailing, to place even national security at risk,” SYRIZA-PA said.

EYP usually monitors people for reasons of national security.
