Greece’s public and private sectors are mobilizing for a general strike on Wednesday, March 8, a week after the deadly head-on train collision as more details about chronic negligence and a blame-game anger more and more the Greek society.
The strike start was made by public sector union ADEDY, but meanwhile one after the other strike announcements by trade unions reach the volume of a flood.
Unions and students organizations demand a thorough investigation into the causes of the train collision that cost the live of 57 people and the real punishment of all those involved in the “murderous crime in Tempi” condemning any attempt for cover-up.
Secondary education pupils are reportedly preparing for school occupations on the same day.
Strike Participations
Reportedly, so far:
- teachers of primary and secondary education
- public sector union ADEDY
- Athens & Piraeus Labor Centers (private sector; local unions of GESEE umbrella)
- The Federation of Associations of Hospital Physicians of Greece is joining the mobilization denouncing the government which “did not hesitate on Saturday, just four days after the tragedy in Tempi, to table the extreme bill that privatizes the only Pediatric Oncology Unit in the country”.
Public Transport Means, Trains and Ferries
Buses, trolleybuses in Attica on 24-hour strike from 6 a.m. March 8 until 6 a.m. March 9
Trains and suburban train Proastiakos on 48-hour strike on March 7-8
Panhellenic Maritime Federation (PNO) has decided to declare a 24-hour strike for all categories of ships and ferries departing from the port of Piraeus. The strike starts at 00.01 in the morning on Wednesday until 24.00 of the same day.
Workers on the fixed-track means Metro Lines 2 and 3 and urban train ISAP (Metro Line 1) and the Tram are also moving towards mobilization, however, final decisions have not yet (Monday evening) been made.
It is being considered to operate during several hours to facilitate the public participate in the rallies.
The calls to the protest rally is at 12:30 noon in Klafthmonos square in downtown Athens and outside the Athens University (Propylaia) for Comminist party KKE union PAME.
