Wildfire on Paros island forces evacuation of several settlements

Alarm sounded on the island of Paros, after a fire broke out in the Kampi area of the island’s landfill early in the afternoon of Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

Residents and visitors in several settlements received alert messages on their mobile phones to evacuate towards a certain direction.

The fire is burning waste and low vegetation, while winds are blowing with a moderate intensity.

Firefighters from the Paros Fire Brigade are operating at the scene with vehicles, as well as with one helicopter and two water-dropping aircraft, water tankers and construction equipment to delimitate the fire.

Seven firefighters are expected to arrive to Paros by boat from the neighboring islands of Naxos and Syros. Already 10 local firefighters have been trying right from the beginning to take the fire under control.

In addition, two firefighting aircraft Canadair are also expected to arrive form Athens with the aim to assist in extinguishing the fire.

At 14:42 local time, a 112 emergency message sent by the Civil Protection to residents and tourists recommended the evacuation to Aliki, if they were in the areas of Agios Charalambos, Kampi, Bougados and Aneratzia. One more message a little later urged citizens to evacuate the Kamari area, also towards Aliki.

Speaking to state-run news agency amna.gr, the Mayor of Paros, Konstantinos Bizas, clarified that the fire broke out in the landfill area and not in a residential or forest area, emphasizing at the same time that all available forces on the island are at the scene, fighting to contain it.

According to the Fire Department’s update, the Operations Center was notified at approximately 1:30 p.m. and immediately proceeded to mobilize forces. The fire is burning waste and low vegetation in the Kampi area, where there are scattered residences, which led to the immediate reinforcement of the operation.

The Municipality of Paros is also actively participating in the firefighting efforts providing two water tankers and a construction vehicle, in order to support the work of the Fire Department.

The Cyclades Arson Crime Investigation Team has already been investigating the circumstances and conditions under which the fire broke out.

The efforts of the firefighting forces continue with the aim of immediately delimiting and completely extinguishing the fire, in order to prevent any risk of its expansion to the surrounding areas.
