A 19-year-old man from Scotland lost his life on the island of Zakynthos in an incident involving an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) early on Friday. The four-wheeler veered off its intended path and overturned, resulting in a fatal injury to the rider.
His fellow-passenger, a British national of the same age, only suffered minor injuries such as cuts and bruises.
The accident occurred on the Gerakario-Alikana road in the early hours of Friday morning, with the island police informed of the incident at 2:30 a.m.
Speaking to state broadcaster ERT, eyewitnesses said that both individuals involved were wearing helmets and were traveling at a low speed.
According to the same report, the driver attempted a sudden maneuver, causing the ATV to overturn and tragically leading to the rider’s fatal injuries.
Police on Zakynthos are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Each and every summer, foreign tourists die or are injured in accidents with ATV-vehicles.
There have been calls for safety measures before they are allowed to rent such a bike and drive ii on roads they are not used to.

Whilst it is tragic when someone loses their life in such a way, it is not surprising and accidents involving quad bikes (ATVs) are common on Zakynthos. They are not designed for road use, do not steer like a car or motorbike. Given that most of the riders are not used to handling quads, do not know the roads and, in the case of British tourists, not used to driving on the right side of the road, it is simply a recipe for disaster.
On top of all that, there is a large number who seem to think they are in a race as they tear down the roads trying to overtake whatever is in their way.
It is time they were banned from public roads.

I agree. In my opinion most of the accidents happen because these machines are in the hands of inexperienced drivers who have little respect for them, thinking them to be some kind of toy. Get them off the roads before anyone else dies.
