Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued an Emergency Bulletin of Dangerous Weather Phenomena for the next days, Tuesday to Thursday, July 25-27, 2023. The warning refers to the third wave of heatwave CLEON that has been striking Greece on and off since July 12.
The prolonged heatwave been plaguing Greeks and tourists not only with”suffocating atmosphere but the hot-dry-windy combination has also lead to several wildfires with the biggest one on the island of Rhodes out of control since July 17.
On Tuesday EMY updated its heatwave warning forecasting also 46 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, July 26. (details see below)
In summary:
On Monday 24-7-2023 temporary retreat of very high temperatures.
On Tuesday 25-7-2023 new (the third) thermal flare-up with very high temperatures.
On Wednesday 26-7-2023, very high temperatures throughout the country, but from the afternoon the heat wave will begin its retreat from north-western Greece.
On Thursday 27-7-2023 a noticeable drop in temperature.
HEATWAVE – DANGEROUS WEATHER PHENOMENA by EMY
Monday, July 24-7-2023 the temperature will drop by 2 to 5 degrees Celsius, with the largest drop observed in the eastern country and the smallest in the west. The maximum values will reach:
a. In the Ionian islands and their mainland 38 to 40 and in places in western Sterea and the Peloponnese 41 to 42 degrees Celsius
b. the Dodecanese and southern Crete 38 to 39 degrees Celsius
c. in the rest of their island country 35 to 37 degrees Celsius.
Tuesday July 25 a new heat wave is forecast in the country. The maximum temperature values will reach:
a. On the mainland 40 to 42 and locally in the interior of Thessaly and Sterea 43 to 44 degrees Celsius
b. in the Ionian islands, the eastern Aegean islands, the Dodecanese and southern Crete 39 to 41 degrees Celsius
c. in the rest of island Greece, 36 to 38 degrees Celsius
Wednesday July 26 temperatures will reach the very high levels of Tuesday, but from the afternoon in the northwestern country, and more specifically in the northern Ionian, Epirus and western Sterea, the weather situation will change with storms that will be temporarily accompanied by very strong north-northwest winds (bourinia). These short-lived, but intense phenomena will extend in the evening to Macedonia, Thessaly, the western Peloponnese and the southern Ionian.
Specifically: temperature in many areas of the eastern country will rise by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius in the shade. The maximum values will reach:
a. in Thessaly, eastern Sterea and the Peloponnese 43 to 45 degrees Celsius and locally in the interior of eastern Sterea and the eastern Peloponnese 46 degrees Celsius
b. in Thrace, central and eastern Macedonia and the islands of the eastern Aegean 40 to 42 degrees Celsius
c. in the Ionian Islands, Epirus, western Sterea and western Macedonia 38 to 40 degrees Celsius
d. in Crete, the Cyclades, the Sporades and the Dodecanese 39 to 41 degrees Celsius.
Note: a meteoologist told state ERT TV at 9 p.m. Monday, that temperatures on Wednesday may reach even higher than 45°C especially in the eastern parts of the country.
Thursday July 27 temperature is predicted to drop by 6 to 8 degrees throughout the country and will not exceed 35 to 37 degrees.
