Samaria Gorge will remain closed until Monday, August 21, 2023, due to fear of aftershocks and landslides after the earthquake of 4.9 R ten days ago. The Gorge will be accessible again as of Tuesday, August 22. However, visitors will need to sign a declaration that “assume responsibility in case of danger.”
The Natural Environment and Climate Change Organization announced on Sunday, that due to the post-seismic sequence that is ongoing in the wider area of the White Mountains National Forest, the Samaria gorge will remain closed to visitors until Monday, August 21, 2023.
The Organization has proceeded to clean up the rockfalls resulting from the August 13th earthquake and initial control of the path so that the Forest can be visited by the public on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, subject to the results of the on-site inspection of the site to be carried out by the competent services and specialist scientists.
In any case, visitors are informed that they assume full and individual responsibility for the possible risks during their entry, passage, stay and exit from the Samaria Gorge – National Park, declaring, signing and compulsorily presenting at the entrances of the canyon.
A relevant responsible statement which will be available on the electronic ticketing site (https://samaria-tickets.necca.gov.gr/el/checkout) and which will also be sent to tourism service offices.
Meanwhile, the Spanish tourist who was injured in Samaria Gorge from falling rocks during the earthquake, has been transported with a medical ambulance to his home country on Friday.
The 42-year-old man had one of his legs ambulated and remained in critical condition in Chania hospital.
