Water Contamination: “State of Emergency” for Zakynthos Municipality

Secretary-General of Civil Protection declared “state of emergency” for the municipality of Zakynthos on Monday, following the oil contamination of the water supply network.

The state of emergency has a duration of a month, that is until February 12, 2024, local media reported.

Last Thursday, January 12, residents of the city of Zakynthos were shocked to see oil coming from their homes faucets along with water. They immediately informed authorities but it was not until Friday afternoon when authorities reacted and interrupted the water supply thus issuing a warning (KTG reported in detail here).

In an interview on SKAI TV on Monday, mayor Giorgos Stasinopoulos said that the water system in Zakynthos became contaminated when oil spilled onto a road during the filling of a tank filling. The oil entered the rainwater system and, due to a ruptured pipe, it contaminated the water supply.

Since the authorities realized the contamination on Thursday, residents had to source water from municipal and private water trucks.

Local authorities proceeded immediately to the appropriate cleaning and chlorination procedures.

The mayor and the president of the Municipality Water and Sewage Company have traveled to Athens to consult with relevant ministries in order to determine further actions.
