Another femicide in Greece, the second since the start of the year: A 45-year-old woman who was covered in flammable liquid by her husband and set on fire succumbed to her injuries. The woman was seriously injured and died after a week in hospital.
The husband poured flammable oil over his wife and set her one fire in front of the couple’s son and their minor grandchildren in Zefyri, western Athens, on January 8.
Slightly injured was also the 20-year-old as he tried to help his mother. It was him who took her to hospital.
The woman suffered serious injuries and despite all efforts she died in the hospital on Tuesday, January 16, ethnos.gr reported.
According to a police statement right after the attack, the 51-year-old perpetrator poured the inflammable liquid on his wife and set her on fire after an argument.
Police arrested the husband who after the woman’s death will face more serious charges, most likely of murder with intent.
Crimes against wives, girl-friends, active or former partners and even mothers, have experience a surge in the last years in Greece, with human rights groups to demand the term “femicide” to be legislated as such in the criminal law.
