Greece Weather Warning: Heavy snow- and rainfalls, winds up 10B

Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY issued an emergency bulletin warning of a weather deterioration with heavy snow- and rainfalls and stormy winds reaching up to 10 Beaufort in the following days.

The weather will gradually deteriorate as of Sunday, January 28, and will continue to affect the country until Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

Main features of the bad weather front are forecast to be:

  • Noticeable temperature drop of 10 degrees Celsius,  Jan 28-30
  • Snowfall mainly in the East of the country from the height of Thessaly, Central Greece, and further South.
  • Stormy north winds in the Aegean Sea
  • Heavy rainfalls and strong thunderstorms mainly in the southern sea-coastal sections.

Note: Winds of 9-10 Beaufort normally affect sea traffic as the Shipping Ministry usually impose a sailing ban for ferries and other ships

EMY WEATHER WARNING

A. Snowfalls

a) Sunday (28-01-24) in the highlands of central and eastern Sterea, Evia and Peloponnese, while from the afternoon hours it will also snow in mountainous areas of eastern Thessaly and Crete.

b) From the morning hours of Monday (29-01-24) the snowfall will continue in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of Thessaly, Sporades islands, central and eastern Sterea, Evia and in the northern and eastern parts of the Peloponnese.

From midday the phenomena will intensify and it will snow in areas with a lower altitude (indicative 300-400m). Snowfall will also occur on the Aegean islands (in the highlands) as well as in the mountainous – semi-mountainous areas of Crete.

In Attica, intensity of snowfall is forecast from Monday afternoon (29-01-24) in mountainous and semi-mountainous areas and from the evening in areas with a relatively lower altitude (indicatively 300-400m).

c) On Tuesday (30-01-24) snowfalls will continue even in areas with a lower altitude in Thessaly, central and eastern Sterea (including Attica), Evia, the Sporades, the northern and eastern regions of the Peloponnese as and in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas of the northern and eastern Aegean islands, the Cyclades and Crete.

d) On Wednesday (31-01-24) the snowfall will gradually weaken and will be limited to the mountains and semi-mountains of Crete.

Gale-force Winds

B. Gale force north-northeast winds of 9 and locally 10 Beaufort will blow:

a) From the early hours of Tuesday (30-01-24) initially in the northern and gradually in the central and southern Aegean Sea.

b) On Wednesday (31-01-24) stormy north winds will be maintained in the Aegean but from the midday hours in the north they will be limited to 8 Beaufort and will gradually weaken.

C. Rainfalls and Thunderstorms

Heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms are forecast of Sunday (28-01-24) locally in Evia and Crete.

From Monday noon (29-01-24) until Tuesday ( 30-01-24) mainly in Sporades, Evia, Cyclades and Crete.
