Athens taxi drivers will launch a 48-hour strike on February 27-28, 2024, their union SATA announced on Wednesday. They call on their colleagues across Greece to join the action.
The decision was made during an emergency meeting of the Administrative Council on Wednesday and it is the second of this kind since end November 2023.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the union expressed its concerns about the government’s economic policies, alleging that they adversely affect individual entrepreneurship in the country.
SATA calls on taxi drivers across Greece to join their strike actions.
Among other, taxi drivers demand:
- Free passage in bus lanes for loaded taxis.
- Answer from the government, “because it allows illegal web applications that use either taxis or other vehicles to pay no taxes.”
- Adjustment of predetermined price for the route Athens Airport – City Center from 40 euros to 45 euros (daytime) and from 55 euros to 60 euros (night time).
- Permanent VAT rate on taxi services at 13%.
- Removal of the mandatory registration of new Taxi cars only with zero emissions from 2026. SATA’s proposal is to postpone this obligation to 2035.
- Clear and without gray areas separation of the services provided by the Taxi and the rental car with a driver.
“The government’s indifference to our demands is a cause of war”, SATA pointed out in a related announcement.
During the strike, a General Assembly of the sector is scheduled for February 28 at the Peristeri Exhibition Center in western Athens to align their statutes with legislation.
A protest rally and a march to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport are planned for the same dates.
