Police officer arrested for thefts in Airbrn apartments

A police officer was arrested for robbing Airbnb apartments in the center of Athens. He had been suspended from duty a few months ago for drugs and weapons trafficking.

Together with a 25-year-old accomplice, the 24-year-old police officer had managed to obtain a spare key for a specific Airbnb apartment in downtown Athens in which he broke in least three times and stole personal items of the customers.

The Police Internal Affairs department had received a tip off for the actions of the already suspended officer took him under close surveillance.

Last Saturday, he was caught red-handed with a stolen I-PAD and a suitcase full of  personal items and clothes, all stolen from the Airbnb apartment.

As soon as he saw his colleagues, the policeman fell on them and hit them in his attempt to escape.

The Department of Internal Affairs had first to deal with the 24-year-old when it received a complaint in last October that he was “involved in drug and weapons  trafficking.” His details were identified and he was subsequently placed under surveillance. He was reportedly charged with human trafficking, drug trafficking and breach of duty.

Now he faces charges for forming a gang, distinguished thefts by complicity and repeatedly, violence against police officers and judicial personnel, as well as violation of the legislation on weapons and drugs.

On Thursday morning he is expected to testify to the investigator and until then he remains in detention.

His accomplice is a foreign national with a long criminal record.

Police continues investigation.
