Every Easter the same plague: injuries due to firecrackers and flares and arrests for the same reason. Seven people, among them minors, were injured during the Resurrection ceremony in churches throughout Greece at Holy Saturday midnight.
In Chania on the island of Crete, a 15-year-old boy had to have two fingers of his right hand amputated after he got injured from a sound-flare on Resurrection night.
In Kalyvia village in Attica, an adult had also to have two fingers amputated due to the false handling of a flare before the Resurrection.
State broadcaster ERT reported that a total of seven people were injured for firecrackers and flares before and after the Resurrection.
The use of firecrackers, flares and improvised fireworks in Easter celebrations often leads to injuries despite calls from the authorities to avoid them.
In Kalamata, south Peloponnese, a naval flare landed in a house yard, injuring a 64-year-old man and his 37-year-old daughter on Saturday evening. A 58-year-old man has been arrested for causing bodily harm and illegal use of flares. Both victims were taken to hospital where they received first aid and were released.
Police has been contacting searches and has arrested over seven people.
