Leader of main opposition SYRIZA, Stefanos Kasselakis, visited a refuge camp near Bethlehem on Sunday as part of his 2-day visit in Palestine.
“We are here to promote the two-state solution based on UN resolutions,” he said.
Accompanied by the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities of Palestine, Hani Al-Hayek, Kasselakis said he had the opportunity to talk with the residents of the camp, to be informed about the situation and to hear their stories.
The Al-Aida camp, in which more than 6,000 people live, is one of the oldest in Palestine, as it was created in 1948 after the events that followed the establishment of the state of Israel and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes.
The visit to the refugee camp in Bethlehem is part of SYRIZA’s efforts to support the Palestinian people and highlight the problems faced by refugees in the region.
Kasselakis and al-Hayek also discussed the need for an immediate ceasefire and the provision of humanitarian aid, as well as promoting the two-state solution based on UN resolutions, recognizing the Palestinian state within the boundaries of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital, and stressed the need for the Western world to send a clear message for a permanent peace solution between Israel and Palestine.
