Wildfire in Eastern Attica: Evacuations, homes and businesses at risk

A wildfire in the eastern Attica has flooded residents of the south suburbs of Athens even those 50 km away and in opposite direction with warning message urging them to evacuate.

According to the Fire Service, the fire broke out in the parking lot of a facility renting boats on a side road of Varis-Koropiou Avenue.

Strong winds blowing with intensity of 6-7 Beaufort and gust up to 8 B spread the blaze quickly.

The fire is currently burning low vegetation that is dry due to the prolonged heatwaves in June and the absence of rain.

Speaking to Skai TV, the mayor of Vari-Vouliagmeni said that the flames have already entered the yards of houses in the area that is in fact sparsely inhabited, however with craft-shops, businesses and small factories.

Two houses have been severely damaged by the wildfire, an elderly man was transferred to safety, the TV station reported.

22 horses of a riding club are to be evacuated.

Those in the wider area received a notification on their mobile phones, through a message from 112 due to a fire that has broken out in Varis – Koropiou.


Within 20 minutes after the wildfire broke out, residents in the wide area of Attica received warning messages via the emergency line <112> and were urged to evacuate the settlements of Lamprika and Kitsi to Agia Marina and Vari respectively.


The mobilization of the Fire Service was immediate, there are reportedly 52 firefighters, 2 groups of pedestrian units, 19 engines, as well as 4 water dropping  aircraft and 6 helicopters are operating.

Police police has diverted traffic in several areas in the region and there may be disruptions in the exit of Attiki Odos.

There are reports of a second fire front further in the East-South, however, these have not been officially confirmed until short before 3 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Civil Protection had warned of high risk of fire in the area on June 19.

A warning has been issued also for Thursday, June 21.


The Hot-Dry-Windy phenomenon is forecast to last until Friday, June 21, 2024.
