Hot-Dry-Windy weather increases fires risk in Greece, June 18-21 (MAPS)

Hot-Dry-Windy weather increases the risk of forest fires in Greece and thus from Tuesday, June 18, until Friday, June 21, 2024, the meteorological service of the National Observatory of Athens has warned.

Based on the latest available forecast data analyzed by the FLAME pyro-meteorological team of the National Observatory of Athens (EAA) / meteo.gr, the pyrometeorological conditions in the country are expected to deteriorate significantly between Tuesday – Friday, 18 – 21.06.2024.

The reason for this significant deterioration is the strengthening of northerly winds – 6-7 Beaufort- over the Aegean and the eastern mainland in combination with the establishment of hot and dry conditions, which significantly increase the flammability of dead forest fuels.

Overall, the fire-meteorological conditions from Tuesday 18 to (at least) Friday 21 June 2024 are expected to be characterized by the particularly dangerous, for the occurrence and spread of forest fires, type of weather Hot – Dry – Wind.

Hot Weather + Dry Weather+ Wind = Fire

Fire risk analytically June 18-19, 2024

Tuesday, June 18:

A very high potential for any forest fires that occur to be wind-driven with potentially high heat loads is expected in Attica, Viotia (locally), Central & South Evia, Lesvos, Chios, South Samos (locally) and South Crete.

A high potential for any wildfires that do occur to be wind-driven with potentially high heat loads is expected in Corinth, Argolida, Laconia (locally) and Lemnos (locally).

Wednesday, June 19:

Very high potential for any forest fires that occur to be wind-driven with potentially large heat loads expected in Attica, Viotia (locally), Central and South Evia, Laconia, Chios, Samos and South Crete.

High and locally very high potential for any forest fires that occur to be wind-driven with potentially high heat loads is expected in Corinth, Argolida, Cyclades and Lesvos.

Locally high potential for any forest fires that occur to be fire-inducing (self-propelled) with potentially large thermal loads is expected in Ilia and Messinia, Peloponnese.

Meteo.gr points out that in the above mentioned geographic zones, special attention should be paid to areas where northerly winds will “align” with the topography and forest fuel (eg, when the wind blows perpendicular to the slope of a densely vegetated mountain mass), maximizing the potential for extreme fire behavior.

Finally, the forecast data currently available indicates a continuation of the Hot – Dry – Windy pyro-meteorological pattern until Friday, June 21, 2024.
