One police officer was injured and a patrol car went on fire outside the residence of the President of the Supreme Court when a group of unknown individuals hurled petrol bombs in the early morning hours of Thursday.
The police officer suffered injuries on his face and hands and was transferred to a nearby military hospital with 2nd degree burn injuries.
Firefighters and police rushed to the residence in Papagou suburb of north Athens.
According to police, the attack took place around 0:45 early Thursday morning.
Police detained around nine persons who were later released as there was no evidence that they were involved in the attack.
According to media information, the attack outside the house of the president of the Supreme Court was launched by a group of 5-7 people, who threw at least five Molotov cocktail bombs. They approached the house on foot, and then fled the scene in an unknown direction. Authorities investigate, among others, whether they left the area on motorcycles or vehicles, daily ethnos.gr reported.
Preliminary investigation has been undertaken by the State Security, while it is not clear whether the attack aimed at the police guard or the head of the Supreme Court Ioanna Klapa.
However, speaking to a TV station, the spokesperson of Greek Police said that the attack was allegedly against the police officer and not the house of the president of the Supreme Court. The perpetrators allegedly followed the officer and as soon as he entered the patrol car they attacked him, protothema.gr reported.
Speaking to Skai TV, Minister for Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysohoidis stressed that the assailants will be identified and arrested. “Remains of such activities will be eliminated,” he added.
