They all presented themselves as ‘winners’ in the European elections beginning of the month, but the basis of the three major political parties in Greece is boiling.
Then conservative New Democracy rules with less than 28% of the voters preference and this a year after the parliamentary elections that granted the party a second term for Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Main opposition party, (former) left-wing SYRIZA maintained its second position, however not with a percentage leader Stefanos Kasselakis was aiming.
As for socialist PASOK the elections results were far below the target with many party officials and supporters to claim that Nikos Androulakis cannot help the party higher.
This week saw ND, SYRIZA and PASOK in fierce debate with ‘stabs’ behind the back and groups coming together questioning the leaderships tactics and skills.
SYRIZA
The apolitikal leader Stefanos Kasselakis keeps up his own plan to get rid of opponents within the party and create “his own SYRIZA” as he said characteristically this week.
Maintaining his autocratic features, he suspended the daily edition of newspaper Avgi, the media and party organ of the party, out of the blue, and without previous notice the employees.
Yesterday, 87 party MPs and high-ranking party officials sent him a letter asking him to not run the party like a “king” but to listen to the several organs.
It may not be just a speculation that there will be a new division for the party that may end up with just 5 MPs in the Parliament thus depriving it from its role as main opposition.
PASOK
The situation is really tougher in PASOK, with large part of its members to seek for a new leader, insisting to have elections in 2024 and not a year later.
Possible candidates are currently Harris Doukas, the mayor of Athens, and Pavlos Geroulanos, an MP, while there are rumors that also other party members flirt with the idea to take the lead and take the party to its old glorious days, something that is highly unlikely to happen.
Doukas has claimed that he will not abandon the Municipality of Athens which he took over in January if he is elected. He claims that he can play both roles – mayor and party leader – good.
However, should he be the next leader of PASOK, he will be the second party leader who is not a member of the Parliament after Kasselakis,
Anyway, Doukas said he will disclose his plans on upcoming Sunday, when the party Central Committee will convene.
New Democracy
As members of the ruling party, MPs kept low profile in a recent meeting with Kyriakos Mitsotakis, however, they criticized that the party has lost its way, that their voices are not heard and that ministers, especially not elected ones, treat them with arrogance.
Some 20 Mps even raised an issue that could take the country into snap elections: they do not want Katerina Sakellaropoulou to be elected as President of the Hellenic Republic on a second term. They said they favor former Pm Kostas Karamanlis.
The party saw its previous voters fleeing to far-right parties and to denter-left ones.

KKE hopes to obtain gains from a further rift in SYRIZA and so does populist Velopoulos thinking ND will neither manage to bring down the high prices that trouble the Greek society nor deal with the national issues.
