The Deputy Mayor of Dionysos municipality in northeastern Attica, raised serious concerns about the wildfire in Stamata on Monday and claimed that “a a scooter rider dressed in firefighter attire” started the fire.
He alleged that an individual on a scooter was seen throwing small petrol bombs and cited also reports by eyewitnesses.
“I saw footage from the control center. Initially there was one single focal point and six minutes later we saw five focal points in a row. This cannot occur naturally. They told me that they saw a scooter and the driver, dressed in a firefighter ‘s uniform, and he was throwing fire bombs. Logically, we are speaking of arson here ,” deputy mayor Giorgos Komnimakis told Open TV.
The wildfire started on a side road and spread quickly due to powerful winds.
A 45-year-old man died and two others are hospitalized with burned injuries.
At least two houses were burned down.
There is no active fire front in Stamata on Monday.
