Drone operator fined and arrested for the wildfire in NE Attica

Α 35-year-old man, the operator of a drone, was arrested  and has been accused of causing the wildfire in Glyka Nera village in North-East Attica on Wednesday.

According to an announcement by the Fire Service received an administrative fine of 4,675 euros and will appear before an Athens prosecutor later today.

The man is reportedly facing charges for the crime of arson of the forest by negligence with the aggravating circumstance that the fire spread over a large area.

Wednesday afternoon, the man was detained along with three more persons, as they were trying to flee the area where the wildfire broke out in a dense forest at the foot of Hymettus mountain.

Eyewitnesses said they saw a spark before the wildfire started and there are suggestions that very likely a battery of the drone went bust.

According to media reports, all four were employees of a private company manufacturing and dealing with drones.

Investigators reportedly continue their work in order to find out whether other person were involved in the test flight of  the drone flight in the area.

Strong ground and aerial forces were immediately deployed to the area and the fire was contained within two hours.
