Three popular tourist islands in the Aegean Sea, namely Folegandros, Ios and Sikinos, were left without electricity for seven hours on Thursday night.
A likely cause so considered to be the unprecedented demand on power due to the combination of large numbers of tourists and high temperatures.
The outage on the three islands in the Cyclades began at 8.30 p.m. on Thursday and lasted until 3.30 a.m. on Friday.
Network crews have now restored power to Sikinos and Folegandros, while rotating, hour-long outages are being staged on Ios pending the resolution of the issue.
The three islands are reportedly powered by medium voltage underwater cables from Paros, which itself is connected to the power system on the mainland through a high voltage underwater cable.
The medium voltage interconnection lines to the small islands of the Cyclades and the Aegean Sea were built many decades ago and are not designed to supply the current demand for electricity.
PS No maintenance, no infrastructure, no electricity, no water. So simple.

Maybe they should require the tourists to bring their own solar panels?
Would at least be a typical Greek solution 😉
In a country with so much solar, wind and tidal energy potential, it is amazing that islands cannot be self sufficient energy-wise.
Oh wait, the power company holds the monopoly on energy provisioning and makes damn sure it stays that way.
This comment is conspiracy theory, so think of it as such:
‘No maintenance, no infrastructure, no electricity, no water. So simple.’
Do not maintain old nor build new infrastructure. After enough trouble, the most of the people will leave. The islands will be ready to ‘repopulate’, but people with money will choose.
Sorry, it is too hot here, I don’t know what I am saying…forget about this.
