Hospital asks money from firefighter of Albanian mission helping against Xylokastro wildfire

An unbelievable complaint regarding the hospital in Aigio, northern Peloponnese: the hospital asked 20 euro for tests to be conducted to a firefighter, member of an Albanian mission that came to Greece to help contain the big wildfire in Xylokastro.

The firefighter, a member of the Albanian mission that was called to help with the fire in Xylokastro had suffered a seizure and his colleagues took him to he hospital.

A hospital employee at the registration has allegedly asked the firefighter in epileptic seizure to pay 20 euros for the necessary tests.

According to local peloponnisos.gr, his colleagues protested arguing that the demand was “unacceptable” especially as the Albanian mission was in the area following a request by the Greek authorities.

It was ultimately a bystander, a citizen, who paid the 20 euros.

“I was ashamed, we became an international disgrace,” the citizen who eye-witnessed the incident said.

Finally, the firefighter was examined and taken for further medical examination and brain MRI to the University General Hospital of Patras where he was not asked to pay anything.

The Albanian firefighting mission arrived in Greece on Wednesday morning and it was on the way to Xylokastro when the firefighter felt unwell and  suffered seizures.

The local media contacted the hospital governor for a comment, he advised them further to the governor of the Regional Health Unit who could not be reached.

The otherwise very talkative Health Minister has no comment to the incident either.

  1. Good on the by-stander but a disgrace for Greece. Would they have done the same to a German firefighter?
Next time, they might be coming anymore.
