Unprecedented! Daycare personnel handed the wrong child over to a 64-year-old grandfather who took it home without recognizing the error.
The incident triggered the intervention of the Athens prosecutor’s office and the launching of an internal investigation by Papagos-Holargos Municipality in northern Athens that is in charge of municipality kindergartens.
The incident took place on Tuesday, when the grandpa went to pick up his granddaughter from the day care. He was handed the wrong child and took it home.
It was the child’s parents who were terrified to see that the grandpa brought an unknown child home.
Back in the day care, after the grandpa left with the wrong child, the grandmother of the other family arrived with the teachers telling her they had already given her grandchild to someone else…
Panic broke out, the police was called in and eventually the family was notified and returned the wrong child back to the kindergarten.
The mother of the 18-month-old child the grandpa had brought home complained to media that the daycare did not even apologized for the incident and they tried to avert them from calling the police.
The two little girls were wearing similar clothes with a pink coat, the mother added.
Daycare teachers but also the grandfather have been reportedly arrested for not recognizing his own grandchild. He claimed he had problems with his vision.
The Municipality of Papagos – Cholargos announced that it will be checked whether the prescribed procedure for the departure of the children was followed, while all the required data will be gathered to establish that disciplinary offenses have been committed since the incident is “extremely serious.”
