Chaos in Athens streets and Proastiakos due to power outage

Power outages in many parts of Greek capital Athens on Thursday morning created chaos in public transport, mainly the Proastikos suburban train, and traffic lights in central Athens causing traffic jams in main avenues and delays to thousands of commuters.

There were reports of a brief interruption of service on the Athens metro, between Doukissis Plakentias station and the Athens airport.

In an announcement, the management of Proastiakos said “significant delays and disruptions” are expected on the service, particularly between Menidi and the Athens airport, as the power outages have knocked out the remote control system on that stretch of the line.

The problem appears to have been caused by a breakdown of a substation of the Greek electricity Distribution Network (DEDDIE) that led to a drop of voltage throughout the network, while the remote control was also out of service for some time.

It remains unclear whether the power outages were caused from the rainfall in the morning or some other problem.
