Greece has been supporting Ukraine right from the start, says Greek FM

“Greece has from the start adopted a position in favor of full support for Ukraine in the war started by Russia, contrary to all concepts of international law,” Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis upon his arrival at the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on Monday.

Gerapetritis clear statements come hours after US President Joe Biden gave the green light to Ukraine to use ling-range missiles against Russia no matter what the consequence for the rest of Europe.

The FM noted that Greece “has clearly stated that hostilities in the Middle East should cease immediately, that there should be full humanitarian aid, unconditional release of hostages and the Palestinian people should be given a vision for the creation of an independent state in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.”

Gerapetritis added that the European ministers will discuss the Euro-Atlantic relations after the elections in the United States, focusing on the “need to have a very strong European policy in the direction of the EU’s strategic autonomy”.

He also noted that in 45 days Greece will be member of the UN Security Council and helping to produce “international security policy based on the principles of international law, with full adherence to the Charter of the United Nations.” He stressed that “Greece will have an important role to play and we will do so based on our basic principles for the peaceful resolution of all disputes.”

The minister said that he will also have the opportunity to hold a series of meetings on the sidelines of the Council, such as the meeting he had with his Moldovan counterpart and a planned meetings with the French foreign minister and the EU special representative for the Horn of Africa.
