Two arrested for possession of 172 ancient artifacts

Two people were arrested during a police operation in Alimos, suburb of southern Athens, where 172 ancient artifacts were discovered.

According to the Hellenic Police, the arrests followed intelligence gathering and analysis that led to the identification of three apartments in the same building.

During searches of the apartments on Monday, officers confiscated 172 artifacts, which the Antiquities Authority confirmed fall under legislation protecting cultural heritage. Eight of the items require further examination.

The artifacts span multiple historical periods, including the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine eras, the police said.

The suspects were charged with violating laws on antiquities and cultural heritage protection and were brought before the prosecutor.
