Greek employee at UN accused of embezzlement of over one million USD

A Greek high-ranking employee at the United Nations is facing fraud and forgery charges after she allegedly embezzled more than one million dollars over a period of seven years. The woman held an important position managing significant funds.

The case was initially submitted by the UN to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, which in the process declared it lacked jurisdiction and forwarded the file to the Athens Prosecutor’s Office.

The suspect is accused of misappropriating over $1,000,000 between 2014 and 2021. Her fraudulent activities were exposed during a routine UN audit, which revealed that she had been submitting expense reports with forged documents. Greek media reported.

The Athens Prosecutor assigned to the case, summoned the suspect for questioning where she denied the allegations, claiming to be a victim of her superiors and attributing the fraud to flaws in the monitoring system.

However, the prosecutor pressed charges for two felonies and referred the case to an investigative judge.
