As the seismic activity in Santorini continues and many businesses had to shut down as owners and workers left the island, the Labor Ministry announced on Tuesday, a series of emergency measures for employees, similar to those during the Covid-19 epidemic.

The measures will go into effect once they are passed by Parliament, will be introduced in addition to the state of emergency in terms of civil protection already in effect.
Employers in the municipality of Thera may suspend work contracts of those who were hired by January 31, 2025 for one month (February 1 to March 3). Employers are forbidden from laying off staff during the month-long suspension, and any attempt to do so will be considered invalid.
Once the suspension ends, businesses using the measure are expected to maintain the same number of positions as during the suspension period.
Staff whose contracts are suspended have a right to a special compensation amount of 534 euros, corresponding to 30 days, while their rights to social insurance and corresponding rights to bonuses is maintained.
The compensation will not be taxed, and will be funded through the state budget.
Businesses and employers are expected to enter related information on specific platforms.
Even though there are no masses of tourists in Santorini in January and February, there are still small groups visiting the island and despite the tremors as they had booked their trips earlier.
At the same time, many touristic businesses take advantage of the “dead winter season” to make repairs and other preparations ahead of the season opening and hire personnel for this purpose.

So worrying for everyone.😒
