After a month’s break due to earthquake swarm, schools on four islands in the Aegean Sea opened on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. Schools on Santorini, Ios, Amorgos and Anafi welcomed back their students and teachers.
Minor tremors are still being recorded around the islands, but experts seemed confident during a meeting last week that the phenomenon is coming to an end and life can return to normal.
Before the schools opened, thorough inspections were carried out on the school buildings by experts, who assured that they were safe for children to attend. The decision to reopen was based on the fact that the seismic activity has decreased significantly, scientists said.
However, a portion of residents are expressing concerns, believing that some schools may not have been adequately inspected. They point out that some of the older buildings need maintenance, regardless of seismic activity.
Increased safety precautions are being put in place, however, and residents are advised to be especially careful about the routes they choose to get around, and about checking their homes and businesses for damage.
The Santorini Municipality assures that the school units are safe and where repairs are required, they will be carried out immediately.
At the same time, life in Santorini is returning to normal. Shops and businesses are reopening, as March marks the start of the tourist season. Construction work is in full swing, with hotel units and commercial stores preparing to welcome visitors, state broadcaster ERT reported.
