National Gallery in Athens temporary closed after MP attack

The National Gallery in Athens has announced its temporary closure following the attack on a number of art works by an ultra-religious MP earlier on Monday.

“The operation of the National Gallery–Alexandros Soutsos Museum is temporarily suspended due to the attack on works of art by the Niki party MP for Thessaloniki II Nikolaos Papadopoulos,” a statement said on Monday afternoon.

“A new announcement from the National Gallery will follow later in the day,”  the statement added.

Police has arrested Nikolaos Papadopoulos, MP with religious-fundamentalist nationalist party Niki after he raided the National Gallery in the morning and destroyed art works shouting “they are insulting our religion.” –  Details HERE on KTG

  1. This is neo-Nazi thuggery, and a disgrace to Greece. Members of Parliament do not have the right to engage in criminal violence: when they do so, they must be arrested and prosecuted. The fact that the public prosecutor considers this violence to be a misdemeanour and not a crime is evidence that the Greek legal system is broken, and does not support the rule of law. In Greece, politicians do as they like, usually with legal impunity. It is not only the Tempi tragedy that shows how broken both the Greek legal system and the Greek state are.
