Police is dealing with the mysterious death of an elderly homeless man in a restaurant in downtown Athens. Employees carried the body outside to disorient the authorities.
It was two days ago when the Greek Policewas informed that a man was lying dead outside a restaurant in the center of Athens. Officers immediately rushed to the scene where they found an elderly man with a blow to the head and who was unconscious and covered in blood, protothema.gr revealed on Wednesday.
Questioning the restaurant owner about the case, he allegedly assured police officers that the man was outside the store when he suddenly lost his balance and fell, resulting in his fatal injury. His claims, however, were later refuted by images recorded by the restaurant’s own cameras.
The officers saw in the footage, employees taking the elderly man unconscious out of the store, leaving him outside in front of the store and then mopping the area.
Both the owner and the two employees corrected their testimonies later, claiming this time that they had mopped inside, the man entered the area, tried to go to the bathroom in the basement, slipped, fell and he was fatally injured. They then claimed that they took the man out of the store and mopped the area so as not to be charged.
Both the owner and the employees were arrested with the police investigating all scenarios. One of them is the possibility that the man entered the restaurant and the owner or an employee pushed him while trying to get him out, resulting in the fall of the homeless victim and being fatally injured.
According to latest information by Mega TV Live News, the man was 57 years old and the restaurant is a well-known one in the pedestrian zone close to Omonia Square.
A video from the security camera shows that it was in the middle of the day when the two employees, Syrian nationals, carried the man outside and left him on the pavement.
Speaking to newsit.gr, the owner said that they took him outside so that he could breath. they were not aware that he had died. They had to mop the floor because “we are a restaurant.”
He said that he was absent at the moment of the incident on March 24, and returned when he received a call by his employees.
He added that the homeless victim, a Romanian national, was known in the area and a user (of drugs.)
A reporter of a TV channel said that also passersby called the police when they saw the two bringing out the man and leaving him there.
