Taste Atlas: Greek street food Souvlaki falls to 55th place

Greek Street Food, among the best in the world, have gotten strong competition this year, with the famous Souvlaki to have fallen down to 55th position in this year’s “golden” street food list as rated in gastronomic guide Taste Atlas.

On top of the Taste Atlas list of the 50 best dishes in the street food category, is the Algerian Garantita, a dough made of chickpea flour, oil, spices and water, covered with beaten egg and baked in the oven until golden brown, served hot with harissa and cumin.

This Algerian savory dough has beaten out the world-famous Greek street food, such as souvlaki, gyros, kontosouvli and kokoretsi.

The gastronomic guide with the best street food does have a Greek street food though: Kontosouvli is among top 20 of the best street food. Gyros is on 23rd position, but Souvlaki appears to have fallen to 55th place and Kokoretsi to 96th.

In second place, belongs to China with guotie, followed by siomay from Indonesia and in fourth place is the Quesabirria dish from Mexico – the top five is completed by the Indian dish Parotta.

Kontosouvli = Short spit

In 19th place we find the famous and delicious “kontosouvli” a traditional dish consisting of large pieces of pork marinated in a mixture of herbs and spices, then skewered and slowly cooked on a grill, like a gyros or souvlaki, the Taste Atlas noted in its description.

The marinade often contains ingredients such as garlic, oregano, thyme, rosemary, paprika, olive oil, lemon juice and red wine.

After marinating, the meat is passed onto a large skewer and grilled over an open flame, resulting in a rich and flavorful outer crust with a juicy, tender interior. The cooked meat is usually served in thick slices, often accompanied by pita bread, tzatziki sauce and a village salad, among other possible accompaniments.

Traditionally prepared for Easter, but today it is found on the menus of Greek taverns throughout the year,” the guide wrote in its description.

A few places further down, in 23rd place, is Gyros

many places further down, in 55th, is Souvlaki
