Greece in the grip of heatwave with over 42°C

For a second consecutive day, Greece is in the grip of the first heatwave in summer 2025 with temperatures reaching over 42 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country.Heatwave conditions and extreme heat stress in parts of the country until Saturday, June 28, 2025.

According to meteorologists, the heatwave conditions and extreme heat stress are forecast to prevail until Saturday, June 28, while temperature drop down to 8 degrees Celsius is expected in the days to follow starting as of Sunday, June 29, 2025.

The peak of the extreme heat is forecast to be on Friday, June 27.

According to the latest forecast data from the meteo service of the National Observatory of Athens, the prevailing atmospheric circulation in the Mediterranean and Europe will result in the transport of warm air masses towards the country with temperatures expected to be locally up to 10-12 °C higher than seasonal normal levels.

Locally, heatwave conditions will prevail near the ground, with the maximum temperature expected in the region of 39-40 °C at noon on Thursday, June 26.

On Friday, June 27, the temperature will reach 41-42 °C in places, while on Saturday, June 28the maximum temperature will be in the levels of 39-40°C.

A slight decrease in temperature is expected from Sunday, June 29, when the maximum is not expected to exceed 34-35 °C and only in the western parts of the country will it reach 37-38 °C in places.

The result of the very high temperatures will be the very high or extreme heat load in many areas of the country. According to the biometeorological warning system HEAT-ALARM** and as can be seen in the map in Figure 2 below, extreme heat stress and associated risk are expected on Thursday 25/06 in parts of Macedonia and Thrace, while very high heat stress will also be present in parts of Thessaly and Peloponnese. On Friday 27/06 (Figure 3) extreme heat stress is expected in areas of Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, Epirus, Peloponnese and the islands of the Eastern Aegean, while very high heat stress is expected in most of the country.

PS 40 ° C in the shade of my balcony in south Athens at 3:30 p.m. I feel I’m in hell and I had not survive the day without A/C.

Half of Greeks are at the beaches envied by the other half that they cannot go to the sea.

On the bright side, no prolonged heatwave as in summer 2024.
