Athens will launch a 24-hour metro trial operation on Saturday, July 5, 2025, in a bid to expand the night public transport on the weekend.
Speaking to Skai TV, Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis said a test run without passengers was conducted last weekend.
If successful, the metro and 19 key bus routes in Greek capital Athens will run around the clock on Saturdays starting in September 2025, aiming to curb traffic accidents, especially among young people returning from a night out on Saturdays, the deputy minister announced..
Acknowledging complaints about poor air conditioning in metro trains, the deputy minister noted that 20 of the system’s 52 trains lack A/C. These will be gradually withdrawn for upgrades, temporarily reducing the service frequency.
He stressed that new metro trains will be ordered but he did not specify when this will happen and when they will arrive.
Almost half of metro trains do not have A/C in a city where temperatures are often over 40 degrees Celsius in the summer months.
PS a trial in early July when most Greeks are on vacation outside the city? Oh, there are tourists, though… Nevertheless, Kyranakis was not very clear, and it seems the 24-hou metro operation will be on July 5 only.
