The presence of purple jellyfish in Greek seas is spreading again in July 2025 causing concern to swimmers in various regions and increased preparedness among competent organizations that try to identify the areas where the jellyfish are observed.
According to the Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory, this summer there is an outbreak of purple jellyfish and there are reports of their presence mainly in the coasts of eastern Greece, mainland and islands, especially in Halkida and northern Evia.
“Northern Evia is already facing a serious problem, as it functions as an outlet of the Pagasitic Gulf to the open sea.
The Pagasitic Gulf itself continues to have a presence of jellyfish, mainly on its eastern coasts.
Meanwhile, the outbreak has reached as far as the Northern Sporades islands, with confirmed presences in Skiathos and Skopelos.

According to the experts from the Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory, their initial estimates of the intensity of the purple jellyfish outbreak in the Pagasetic Gulf and surrounding areas were underestimated and that the outbreak is spreading much faster than expected.
The Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory is urging swimmers in the above areas to “be particularly careful”, as “the outbreak is currently spreading at a much faster rate than expected”.
