Greece’s National Meteorological Service EMY updated on Wednesday its heatwave warning stressing that temperatures will remain at very high levels also in the coming days. The heatwave is likely to end throughout Greece on Sunday, July 27, 2025, noted.
*** On Thursday, EMY updated again its emergency and weather warning bulletin saying that the heatwave will last until Monday, July 28, 2025, when tmperature in Athens will reach 40 degrees Celsius.
According to the forecast the worst days temperature-wise will be Thursday and Friday, July 24 and 25, when temperatures will reach 43 degrees Celsius also in Greek capital Athens.
In some area in western Greece temperature is forecast to reach 44 degrees Celsius.
Note that due to the prolonged and extreme heatwave, there are measures banning workers from outdoors work, including delivery, in the peak hours of the heat. Normally 12 noon-5 pm or 11 am-6 pm as imposed today.
At the same time, the Acropolis and another major archaeological sites in Athens temporarily close at midday until Friday, for the same reason.
EMY Heatwave Update
A. Minimum temperatures will fluctuate at high levels -around 28-29 degrees Celsius – mainly in urban centers.
B. from Friday noon, July 25, and Saturday, July 26, strengthened northerly winds of intensity 6 to 7 Beaufort will prevail in the East and mainly in the Aegean Sea.
Temperature levels until July 26:
1. On Wednesday, July 23, maximum temperatures will reach:
a) in mainland Greece 39 to 41 Celsius, in places in central Macedonia, eastern Central and eastern Peloponnese 42 C and in Thessaly 43 C degrees Celsius. In Athens 39 to 40 and in Thessaloniki 39 degrees.
b) in the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese 39 to 40 C and locally 41 C.
c) in the Ionian islands 36 to 37 C and Crete 37 to 38 C.
2. On Thursday, July 24, maximum temperatures will reach:
a) in the mainland 39 to 41 C and locally in Thessaly, eastern Sterea and eastern Peloponnese 42 to 43 C. In Athens 41 to 42 C and in Thessaloniki 39 to 40 C.
b) in the islands of the Eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese 39 to 40 and locally 41 C.
c) in the Ionian islands and Crete 37 to 39 C.
3. On Friday, July 25, maximum temperatures will reach:
a) in the mainland 40 to 41 C , locally 42 C and in the West 43 C. In Athens 41 to 42 C and in Thessaloniki, 38 to 39 C.
b) in the Eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese, 38 to 40 C.
c) in the Ionian islands and southern Crete, 39 to 41 C.
4. On Saturday, July 26, maximum temperatures will reach:
a) in the mainland, 40 to 41 C, locally 42 and in the West 43 degrees Celsius. In Athens, 40 to 41 and in Thessaloniki, 38 to 39 degrees.
b) in the Eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese, 38 to 40 C.
c) in the Ionian islands and southern Crete, 38 to 40 C.
The emergency bulletin will be updated every 24 hours, during which time the temperatures will be re-determined per day and a forecast for the end of the heatwave will be made, EMY noted.
