The Acropolis and five other major archaeological sites in Greek capital Athens will be closed during the midday hours from Tuesday to Friday, July 22-25, 2025, due to the ongoing extreme heatwave, the Greek Culture Ministry announced on Tuesday.
In a statement issued by the Athens Ephorate of Antiquities, the following sites will be closed for the public from 12 noon until 5 p.m.:
the Acropolis, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, Aristotle’s Lyceum, the Roman Agora, the Ancient Agora, and Hadrian’s Library.
The measure aims to protect workers and visitors, the Culture Ministry said.
Greece has been in the grip of a prolonged and extreme heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 43 degrees Celsius since last Sunday, July 20, expecting to last until July 27.
it has been a common practice in the last couple of years to temporary close archaeological sites due to the extreme temperatures. The measure often expands to sites also in regional units mostly affected by the heatwave phenomenon.
