Elderly homeless woman sets herself on fire in central Athens

A shocking incident short after 10 o’ clock on Wednesday morning in downtown Athens: a 67-year-old woman set herself on fire outside the Zappeion Aigli brasserie.

She was rescued from a certain death by the men of the Presidential Guard who happened to be training their march in the premises of Zappeion Park.

The men intervened immediately and put out the fire with a fire extinguisher and called an ambulance.

The woman suffered serious burn injuries on the face and various parts of her body and was taken to a nearby hospital.

According to media information, the woman was homeless, had economic probles and psychological issues.

The circumstances under which the elderly set herself on fire are not clear.

Media reported later that her first words she slurred to her rescuers were ” I had nothing even to eat.”

The woman in hospitalized in stable health condition despite her severe injuries.
