Major police operation against fuel smuggling and fraud on motorists across Greece

A major police operation targeting fuel smuggling was carried out in Attica, Thessaloniki, Arta, Larissa, Trikala, Katerini, Volos, and Laconia on Tuesday.

The operation targeted fuel smuggling, tax evasion via fake invoices, and money laundering from criminal activity.

According to authorities, fraud against consumers has been detected, with gas stations tampering with the inflow-outflow system, stealing at the pump, as well as being involved in tax evasion cases through fictitious documents and money laundering.

The operation, which was conducted in cooperation with the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), the Financial Crime Unit, the Hellenic Fuel Federation, regional development directorates, and local police departments, involved inspections of dozens of fuel stations and storage facilities in the aforementioned areas.

Police arrested at least 20 individuals and seized large sums of money, software used to manipulate inflow-outflow systems, and quantities of fuel obtained through smuggling.

An unknown number of gas stations has been also shut down, media reported.
