Ex PASOK minister Andreas Loverdos joins ruling New Democracy

Andreas Loverdos, former minister of socialist PASOK and leader of the party “Democrats” since 2024, joined the party of ruling New Democracy on Tuesday.

The accession was sealed during a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the leader of New Democracy.

Members of Loverdos’ party also joined New Democracy.

The prime minister welcomed Loverdos and the members of the Democrats party to New Democracy and expressed his appreciation for the former minister, noting that the party has proven that it keeps its doors open to forces that believe in a strong and European Greece.

Loverdos accession to New Democracy did not surprised anyone in Greece, as the 70-year-old politician had often supported the positions of ND on crucial issues.

He is considered one of neo-liberal supporters of former PASOK Prime Minister Kostas Simitis, one of the many who ended up in New Democracy and have been often “honored” with a ministerial post.

Loverdos did not manage to enter the Parliament in the last elections and therefore his ND-entrance does not enrich the ruling party with one more lawmaker.
