Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos sent “a strong message” to the market, urging supermarkets in particular to actively demonstrate social responsibility and cut prices to 1,000 items.
Speaking to Ream FM on Monday, the minister stated that “supermarkets must demonstrate social responsibility and sensitivity and reduce their average profit. They have undertaken a commitment to price reductions on 1,000 product codes and must do so as soon as possible.”
He underlined that the government will not allow irresponsibility and added that strict controls are underway for the implementation of the Code of Conduct.
“We have many complaints, which is why I have ordered intensive inspections of supermarkets. The results will be announced in the coming days,” he stressed.
it should be recalled that consumers in Greece have been facing with constant price hikes in the supermarkets for the last couple of years.
Theodorikakos pointed out that “supermarkets must respect the fact that no citizen should be left behind. That is why we are strict with the market. We support healthy entrepreneurship, but we care about social cohesion and the support of every social group. We will not allow citizens to be constantly burdened.”
PS the government could raise wages, salaries and pensions if the supermarkets refuse to follow the minister’s call. but that’s another story…

I have never read so much garbage in my life! I suppose by the phrase “good fiscal performance” he means that taxes are high and government spending is low. That, to my mind, is a poor fiscal performance — only an accountant would be happy with it.
As for his absurd claim that it is better to reduce income taxes rather than VAT, this flies in the face of standard economic knowledge. Indirect taxation, like VAT, hits the poorest most. Direct taxation, if it is properly managed, hits the wealthy the most. Greece’s VAT rates are obscenely high, hurting the poor: their reduction is a priority. What thus criminal banker suggests, reducing oniy income tax, will help the middle class and rich. — and do nothing for the poorest 25% of Greeks.
Why are all these people in positions of power such lying idiots?
