Police in Crete fines homeless man for “illegal camping”

The Tourist Police in Heraklio, Crete, imposed a fine of 300 euros on a homeless man for “illegal camping”. Officers confiscated his few belongings including food for strays.

All he was allowed to keep was a bag with basic personal items.

According to cretalive.gr, the police confiscated his belongings, including food he intended for the stray animals he takes care of daily with his own means.

“I don’t care about me, God will take care of me. I’m sad for my animals that I won’t be able to take care of them”, he told the local media.

He said that police informed him that he could receive back the confiscated items, but with the risk of being fined again in the future. Until then, he is forced to sleep on the steps next to Neoria, exposed to the weather.

Regarding the strays, Stelios stressed that he has vaccinated them and provides them with medication for parasites, however, he cannot provide them with microchips, as they remain strays.

Moreover, the man was recently informed by a social worker about two-month support programs, which, however, require being a citizen of Heraklion – which is not the case, as a three-year stay in the municipality is required.

  1. In Victorian England, it was a criminal offence to be poor. You were arrested, and sentenced to life imprisonment in a workhouse or poorhouse — forced labour without pay.

Much of Europe is returning to this sort of philosophy — namely, that each person is solely responsible for being unemployed, poor, handicapped, homeless etc. The neo-nazi Right are particularly keen on this approach — and their political support is increasing rapidly, with funding from narcissistic billionaires, loyal working class idiots who blame immigrants for every problem, and cynical educated people looking for money and a career in fascist politics.

The prognosis for the entire world, rich and poorer countries, is absolutely terrifying.

  2. You can see the far-right playbook playing out across Europe. Every country has socio-economic problems. The cause is the vast transfer of wealth to the richest in society that has been happening in all developed countries for the last 50 years.

The far-right’s solution is to pick a section of society that is easily identifiable. In 1930s Germany it was the Jews, today it is immigrants. Next construct narratives that show that the chosen group is to blame for the socio-economic problems. They are taking your jobs, they have different values, they destroy social cohesion etc. Once people are convinced whose fault it is, start to demonise that group. They are stealing from you, they are raping your children, they are eating your pets etc. Once enough people hate that group you can set about persecuting that group with very little opposition.

I realise that this homeless man was probably not an immigrant but once the process is in place other people will get caught up by it.

  3. Unfortunately it is also about Tourism and foreign ‘investors’ . The country must be picture perfect for our ever-wealthier clientele and well heeled lifestyle-nomads. Athens coast must be turned into a “Riviera” of high rises, with apartments equipped with personal pools. (Nobody stops to think how urban / trashy the real Riviera has become). The local marinas must be emptied of the locals’ boats and given over to luxury yachts and hotels. We have priced ourselves out of the middle class market in favour of $$$$ luxury and extreme luxury, starting at 1000 euros a night. And the minimum wage Greeks are now the Smiling Servants.
Stelios and others like him spoil this beautiful picture.

  4. 300€ fine for a homeless person??? How should he pay the fine? With his platinum American Express??? Oh dear….doesn’t matter if you’re police officer or politician or anything else in Greece…humanity is 0 in this country…
