Student electrocuted in Halkida school when she turned light on

A student was electrocuted at school when she pressed a switch to turn the light on. The incident occurred at the Music School of Halkida, Evia, and caused strong reactions and protest voices.

The student suffered an electric shock and was immediately transferred to the Pediatric Clinic of Halkida Hospital, where is still being treated. She is reportedly out of danger.

It is the second incident in a school of the area. Two days earlier, on Monday, October 13, a short circuit occurred in a PPC substation within the premises of the EPAL High school of Halkida, causing a transformer to catch fire. According to an announcement, “it was only by chance that a larger accident did not occur.”

The Parents’ Association speaks of “criminal negligence” on the part of the Municipality and the Ministry of Education, holding them responsible for the lack of maintenance and control of the school buildings, which – as it states – “resulted in the injury of a student and the exposure of dozens of students to danger.”

They stressed that they have repeatedly protested about the condition of the school buildings in Chalkida, but no safety measures have been taken. “We will not stand idly by. We will not back down from our just demand: for our children to go to safe schools and have modern, public and free education.”

The Association calls for immediate inspections of the two schools and sufficient state funding for the maintenance and upgrading of school infrastructure, so that – as it emphasizes – “no child will ever be in danger in their school again.”

  1. I dare say she wasn´t electrocuted (executed by means of electricity), but merely received an electric shock… Or does Greece have the death penalty for turning on lights?
