A 70-year-old woman has been hospitalized in the ICU and in critical condition since last Friday, when she was attacked with a stone by a 38-year-old man.
The victim had gone swimming with a friend at a beach of Glyfada suburb of southern Athens. the animal lover then walked to a nearby hill to feed stray cats, as she would often do.
While she was feeding the stray cats the 38-year-old approached her and threw a stone at her head, seriously injuring her. He allegedly continued beating her furiously even after she had fell on the ground and lost consciousness, media reported.
The victim received first aid from passers-by and her friend and was taken to the hospital where she is fighting for her life.
The attacker initially fled the scene but he was later located and arrested.
It turned out that the 38-year-old man was a homeless with a long history of aggressive behavior, several arrests and conviction who had escaped 18 times from psychiatric institutions. His last escape took place on July 25, 2025, when he fled the Psychiatric Clinic in the public hospital of Nikaia.
The attacker’s background raises a lot of questions that no authority has cared to answer, so far.
A second thing that is striking has to do with a photo of the perpetrator that was found on the woman’s cell phone. According to the victim’s daughter, the photo was taken three days before the attack.
