Greece revokes asylum status to refugees returning to country of origin

Greece revokes the asylum status to refugees who travel and remain in their country of origin. Following an order by the Minister of Migration and Asylum, Thanos Plevris, the Asylum Service issued a circular on thursday October 30, 2025, that provides instructions for the revocation of asylum status for beneficiaries of international protection who travel to and remain in their country of origin.

Citing sources at the Ministry, state-run news agency amna.gr reported that any individual who has been recognized as a refugee in Greece and visits their country of origin, from which they have claimed persecution, will be considered to have provided strong evidence that they are no longer at risk.

As a result, procedures for the suspension of their asylum status will be initiated.
